Members of the Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria (AEAN) have been advised by the Lagos state government to refrain from dealing in any property without a planning permit in the state.

The direction was given by Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the state’s commissioner for physical planning and urban development, yesterday during a courtesy visit to the ministry by the AEAN leadership.

As stated by Olumide, those involved in the construction industry have a responsibility to ensure that everyone builds correctly in order to support organised, orderly, and sustainable growth.

Before agreeing to deal in a property, he noted, members of AEAN would not be out of place to obtain a planning permission, since doing so would add to efforts to checkmate illicit growth and increase sustainability.

Contrary to popular belief, the commissioner stated, the procedure of acquiring a planning permission is comprehensive, uncomplicated, and quick.

Additionally, he instructed the group to provide memoranda that would comprise the Lagos State Urban Development Policy, which was being written by the ministry.

Earlier, Gbenga Ismail, Vice Chairman of the group of Estate Agents in Nigeria, reaffirmed the group’s goal to work with the government to clean up the built environment, particularly as the association approaches its tenth anniversary .
