The Lagos State Government has announced the launch of a new digital platform aimed at streamlining monthly rent payments for tenants throughout the state.
This initiative comes in response to concerns voiced by the state’s Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, regarding the challenges of affordable housing in Lagos, especially given the rapid population growth and limited land resources.
Akinderu-Fatai also warned homeowners against implementing excessive rent increases, indicating that the government would take action against such practices. “We have received numerous complaints about rising rents lately, which has prompted the state to step in to ensure fairness,” the commissioner stated.
Engr. Abdulhafeez Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, confirmed the initiative when contacted. He explained that the project will be a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Housing and various technical partners.
This initiative has become crucial due to a significant rise in complaints from residents about skyrocketing rents, which have surged by over 100 percent in the past four years. The platform is expected to generate around ₦2.5 billion annually from approximately 100,000 users.
Toriola mentioned, “We are in the process of developing this platform.” The aim of the initiative is to tackle these issues by providing a clear and efficient system for managing rent payments, potentially easing the financial strain on residents.
“Alongside the new platform, the government is also ramping up efforts against landlords who charge exorbitant rents. Overall, this initiative is part of Lagos’s strategy to address the rent crisis and simplify payment management for residents. With the rising cost of living, this platform could offer much-needed relief and transparency.”
Additionally, it has been reported that the state government has allocated millions of naira for the project over the next four to six months to support development, operations, and promotional activities.
