The Lagos State Government has announced the revocation of housing units that have remained unoccupied for more than two years. This move aims to promote fair distribution of housing resources.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, in a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs, Ganiu Lawal, on Wednesday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
“The Lagos State Government has decided to revoke housing units allocated to subscribers that have been left vacant for over two years,” the NAN report stated.
The enforcement of this directive was highlighted at the Lagos State Housing Estate in Sangotedo, Lekki, where Akinderu-Fatai underscored the necessity of reallocating these units to individuals genuinely in need of housing.
He noted that this initiative is part of the state government’s broader strategy to tackle housing challenges within Lagos.
“The Lagos State Government Housing Units are intended for those who truly require them, not for speculators,” he emphasized.
Akinderu-Fatai expressed concern over the extended vacancy of units allocated through programs like Rent-To-Own, which are designed for those in urgent need of housing. He cautioned that such neglect could lead to the decline of estate infrastructure and hinder the government’s housing initiatives.
