The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that the Blue Line Rail resumed operations on Sunday following a fire that affected a section of the rail track on Saturday.
The Fire Service confirmed that there were no casualties as emergency responders acted swiftly to extinguish the blaze, which ignited around 4:12 PM on Saturday.
LAMATA spokesperson Kolawole Ojelabi stated that the fire broke out near the old NEPA station by Eko Bridge in the Apongbon area of Lagos Island.
He noted that “as a result, passenger operations on the Blue Line were temporarily halted.
In a further statement, Ojelabi explained, “After the fire started, the system isolated the affected section while investigators and engineers from the Independent Power Plant, which powers the train, worked to identify the source of the fire.
“The Closed-Circuit Television cameras in the area quickly alerted emergency personnel, who initiated the emergency response protocol.
“There were no passengers or workers in danger during the incident. Engineers are diligently working to replace the damaged cables, and we expect train operations to resume by Sunday morning.”
LAMATA emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safe operation of the Blue Line, which is the first electric-powered rail system in West Africa.
