South Africa’s Eskom has connected Unit 2 of its Koeberg nuclear power plant to the national grid following a significant refurbishment, boosting its contribution to the country’s electricity supply. This development aligns with nine consecutive months of uninterrupted electricity, fostering economic optimism in a country previously plagued by constant power cuts. According to Eskom’s CEO, Dan Marokane, Koeberg’s success demonstrates the role that nuclear power can play in balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability. The Koeberg facility, Africa’s only commercial nuclear plant, provides 1,860 megawatts of South Africa’s power needs. Unit 1’s operating license was extended by 20 years in July 2024, with a decision on Unit 2 expected by 2025. The country is also exploring an additional 2,500 MW of nuclear capacity and reviving its Pebble Bed Modular Reactor project, shelved over a decade ago due to funding challenges.
