European defense consortium KNDS has introduced advanced concepts for the Leopard 2 and Leclerc main battle tanks (MBTs).

Called version A-RC 3.0, the new Leopard concept shows the battle-proven MBT with a guided missile system that can engage beyond-line-of-sight and moving targets.

It would also boast a remote-controlled 30-millimeter weapon system for use against aerial and near-field threats.

Additionally, the new version has improved survivability and crew protection, thanks to its passive, reactive, and active protection technologies.

“KNDS assesses the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 not only as a bridge solution until introduction of the next-generation land combat system MGCS (Main Ground Combat System), but also as a decisive technological precursor to MGCS,” the company wrote.

Once finalized, all Leopard 2 variants currently in service can be upgraded to the A-RC 3.0 version.

New Leclerc Concept

Developed for the French Army, the Leclerc is a third-generation, 60-ton class MBT capable of firing arrow, explosive, and canister ammunition in stationary or mobile modes.

It features additional protection on the side and the rear to protect against rocket-propelled grenades.

The new Leclerc concept focuses on increasing the tank’s firepower with the integration of a manned turret hosting a 120-millimeter ASCALON gun.

Instead of three, it would have four crew members to adapt to modern tactical situations.

A deputy commander crew station would also be integrated in the chassis to manage an extensive sensors and effectors suite.

Both the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 and the new Leclerc concepts will be showcased at the Eurosatory 2024 in Paris.
