NATO has awarded a contract to Keysight Technologies for the delivery of radar target generators and electronic warfare simulators.
The systems will be used by NATO Naval Forces Sensor and Weapons Accuracy Check Sites to evaluate and optimize the performance of radar and electronic support measures (ESM) systems employed by allied navies.
Built using commercial Keysight hardware, the equipment includes customized firmware and a graphical user interface developed in Europe to meet NATO standards.
The technology enables high-fidelity radar target simulation, accurately replicating characteristics such as range and radar cross-section variability.
It also generates dense and diverse electronic warfare environments, simulating interference, jamming, and deception tactics to challenge ESM system responses.
The systems feature a modular, open-architecture design, allowing for future upgrades as operational requirements evolve.
They are suitable for both laboratory and field deployment, providing NATO with flexible testing capabilities across multiple sites.
This approach supports greater consistency, precision, and readiness in electromagnetic operations across all member states, Keysight emphasized.
Boosting Defense
To maintain a technological edge in modern warfare, NATO continues to invest in advanced systems to address emerging threats.
Earlier this month, the alliance tested the GANDALF-4 prototype sensor, designed to detect and counter interference with Global Navigation Satellite Systems and to enhance electromagnetic situational awareness.
Additionally, allies are increasing defense spending, with several NATO members now meeting or exceeding the 2 percent of GDP defense investment target.
The US accounts for $997 billion, equivalent to 66 percent of NATO’s total defense spending, while European members contribute $454 billion, nearly one-third of the total.
