Kenya is setting its sights on a digitally empowered future, with the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy (MICDE) outlining its priorities for FY 2026/27 through 2028/29. The Ministry of ICT aims to expand digital infrastructure, modernize broadcast systems, strengthen public communication, improve data protection, and bolster cybersecurity resilience.
The Public Hearings for the FY 2026/27 and Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) were chaired by the Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Stephen Isaboke, with the Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, John Tanui, serving as Acting Sector Chair. These hearings serve as a platform for public engagement, enabling citizens to provide input on national planning, budget priorities, and resource allocation.
During the session, the Ministry showcased the sector’s achievements over the past three fiscal years. Notable accomplishments include enhanced productivity in content development and accreditation, the establishment of seven digital content production centers, and substantial progress in digital infrastructure. Key milestones highlighted were the deployment of 7,152 kilometers of fiber-optic cables, the digitization of 17,668 government services through the eCitizen platform, and the enrolment of over 1.5 million young people in digital skills programs, with more than 182,000 securing online employment opportunities.
Looking ahead to FY 2026/27–2028/29, planned initiatives include additional fiber deployments, expanded public internet access points, full digitization of government services, and the operationalization of national cybersecurity institutions, along with continued investment in energy-efficient broadcasting and connectivity facilities.
The public hearing underlined the critical role of the energy, infrastructure, and ICT sectors in Kenya’s economic, social, and technological development. The session reaffirmed the sector’s commitment to supporting the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and Vision 2030 by fostering inclusive digital growth, increasing opportunities for citizens, and building a resilient, digitally empowered nation.
