Kenya’s active mobile subscriptions rose to 68 million, representing a penetration rate of 132.1%, according to the latest report from the Communications Authority (CA). This marks a 1.95% increase from 66.7 million in December 2023. Safaricom leads the market with 44.7 million subscribers, followed by Airtel with 19.9 million, Finserve with 1.5 million, Telkom Kenya with 1.48 million, and Jamii Telkom with 545,819.

Mobile money subscriptions also saw significant growth, reaching 38.7 million (a 75% penetration rate), driven by M-Pesa’s seamless integration with Airtel Money. Additionally, mobile data subscriptions hit 51.3 million, with 72.6% on mobile broadband. 5G subscriptions jumped from 509,737 to 653,716, while 4G, 3G, and 2G subscriptions stand at 27.6 million, 9 million, and 14 million, respectively.

The CA report noted a 20% growth in international Internet bandwidth, now at 20,744.3 Gbps, due to capacity upgrades. Utilized undersea bandwidth grew by 1.5% to 11,155.154 Gbps, with 8,201.334 Gbps used domestically and 2,953.820 Gbps sold abroad. Satellite capacity also increased, following Starlink’s launch of its high-speed, low-latency LEO satellite Internet in Kenya last July.
