Kenya’s tea industry faces potential setbacks following a diplomatic dispute with Sudan. The Sudanese government recalled its ambassador after Kenya hosted a political meeting for Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, which Khartoum labeled “an act of hostility.” Sudan is a top ten importer of Kenyan tea, a critical export commodity. The ongoing civil war had already reduced Kenyan tea exports to Sudan by nearly 74% in the year leading up to March 2024, with revenues dropping from $18.6 million to $5 million. Industry experts express concern that further diplomatic tensions could exacerbate these declines, urging the exploration of alternative markets to mitigate potential economic impacts.
