The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs Enforcement, revealed on Tuesday that it seized 7,500 liters of bootleg ethanol that is believed to be coming from a neighboring country.

As reported by The Star Kenya, customs Enforcement officers relayed that the illegal consignment was contained in 30 drums with each drum holding a capacity of 250 liters of ethanol which was concealed under 2 tonnes of oranges.

The KRA Customs team estimates that the ethanol cargo will incur customs duties and taxes totaling Sh4 million.

Pending the completion of an investigation, the vehicle will be held at the Lwakhakha Border Station, while the police are still on the hunt for the runaway drivers who escaped after coming in contact with the law enforcement agents.

To ascertain the driver’s identity, KRA officials and the local police are looking into the copy of the records at the verification location.

The Star’s report reveals that in order to improve the surveillance of its market and prevent illicit trading inside its borders, the Kp has implemented a multi-departmental approach.

Furthermore, to stop illicit activity at border crossings, KRA personnel also actively participate in local security committees and share intelligence.

As a result, so far, the law enforcement arm has successfully recovered illegal products and busted smuggling networks around the country.

The KRA claims that it is still working with a multi-agency task force to combat transnational crimes and illegal trade in an effort to protect the integrity of Kenya’s trading environment.
