Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE), Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, has officially inaugurated the Nyeri Regional Office of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), alongside the launch of the ODPC Strategic Plan 2025-2029.

Gitau said that the strategic plan reflects the overall commitment of the government to promoting data protection in the country. He reiterated that the implementation of the five-year strategic plan will significantly boost the country’s position as an ICT hub and investment destination and enhance the data protection landscape.

He noted that this reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the digital rights of citizens and reinforcing public trust in the digital economy. Gitau added that MICDE is committed to ensuring that the requisite data protection laws, regulations, and international conventions are developed and domesticated accordingly, aligning with the mandates of the Data Protection Act 2019.

Designed to serve the Mt. Kenya region, the new regional office will provide individuals, businesses, and public entities with improved access to information, guidance, and enforcement on matters related to data privacy and protection.

This expansion forms part of a larger national initiative to decentralize ODPC operations and reinforce Kenya’s digital economy through enhanced data governance.
