Kenya made history in October 2025 when Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (MESHA) hosted the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) Congress for the first time in East Africa, and the third time in Africa overall.

This year’s event offered delegates from the 61 member countries a chance to explore East Africa’s agriculture sector, share ideas, and tell the stories that will shape the future of global food systems.

Under the theme ‘Unlocking the agricultural potential in the cradle of mankind’, the congress highlighted the critical role that members of the media play in driving sustainable farming, climate resilience, and technological innovation. It also provided a platform for discussions on industry trends, challenges, and opportunities.

In addition, the congress provided a unique platform to showcase Kenya’s role in driving sustainable agriculture.

“This congress showcased Kenya’s agricultural advancements,” Bozo Jenje, board chairperson of MESHA, said at the event.

“Over 18 million Kenyans earn an income from agriculture, and despite Kenya’s impressive advances across the economy, agriculture continues to be the bedrock of development and the key to creating equitable and sustainable growth for our people,” he added.

In Kenya, the Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS) serves as a guide for the direction in which the sector is moving. It is based on the belief that food security requires a vibrant, commercial, and modern agriculture sector that supports Kenya’s economic development sustainably and its commitments to regional and global growth.

To drive Kenya’s transformation over the next 10 years, the ASTGS is anchored in three outcomes: increasing small-scale farmer incomes, increasing agricultural output and value addition, and boosting household food resilience.
