Kenya has inaugurated its first smartphone assembly plant in Machakos, aiming to produce cost-effective devices for the local population. The East Africa Device Assembly Kenya Limited (EADAK), a collaboration between local mobile network operators and international device manufacturers, will oversee the production.

These devices, including the 4G-enabled Neon 5 ‘Smarta’ and 6 ½ ‘Ultra,’ will be available nationwide at Faiba and Safaricom shops, as well as on online platforms. Future plans involve expanding the product range to include locally assembled tablets in the coming months.

Established in line with the government’s commitment to initiate local smartphone assembly capacity, this factory is equipped to manufacture up to 3 million mobile phone units annually.

Joshua Chepkwony, Chairman of EADAK, commented, “This assembly plant will support the government’s agenda to enhance digital inclusion in the country.” He highlighted that affordability has been achieved through collaborative efforts, including industry partnerships and favorable government policies.

The facility is anticipated to create between 300 and 500 direct jobs, promote local talent, and stimulate the local economy. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, expressed, “The launch of EADAK reaffirms our belief in the power of connectivity to transform lives and drive economic progress.” He emphasized the partnership’s commitment to expanding 4G access, providing affordable, high-quality smartphones, generating employment opportunities, and contributing to economic growth.
