Kenya has officially launched its broadband mapping system under the Africa Broadband Mapping Systems (Africa-BB-Maps) initiative, a continental program supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the European Union (EU).
Covering 11 Sub-Saharan African countries—including Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Eswatini, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Kenya—the initiative seeks to harmonize broadband mapping systems across the region. Its core goal is to provide accurate data to inform policymaking, address connectivity gaps, and drive strategic investments in digital infrastructure.

At the launch, Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Director General, David Mugonyi, noted that the system will complement existing connectivity programs, reforms, and regulatory initiatives such as spectrum allocation, infrastructure sharing, and cost reduction.
The ability to link broadband mapping to socio-economic planning will allow us to prioritize connectivity for economic zones, health facilities, agricultural hubs, and community centers, directly improving education, healthcare, commerce, and governance outcomes.
Mugonyi emphasized that the Africa-BB-Maps system will play a pivotal role in narrowing the digital divide and achieving universal connectivity, ensuring that no Kenyan is excluded from the digital future.
Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary, Stephen Isaboke, described the system as a “game changer,” highlighting its ability to deliver data-driven insights into broadband infrastructure, coverage gaps, quality of service, and affordability.
By developing harmonized, validated, and publicly accessible broadband maps, we shall be able to make informed decisions that optimize infrastructure investments and policy interventions.
European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, reaffirmed the EU’s support, pointing out that the EUR 15-million Africa-BB-Maps project will boost broadband connectivity across the region, fostering inclusion, opportunity, and equitable development.
The launch signals the start of Kenya’s full participation in the Africa-BB-Maps initiative, bringing together government, industry, and development partners in a united effort to expand digital access and accelerate socio-economic transformation.
