Kenya Airways Drives Sports Tourism at Magical Kenya Open
When the 2026 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) concluded at the Karen Country Club this February, attention quickly shifted from the leaderboard to Kenya’s growing sports tourism ambitions.
At the centre of that conversation stood Kenya Airways. The national carrier played a crucial role in connecting global athletes and fans to Kenya’s hospitality sector.
By flying in world-class golfers and thousands of spectators, the airline showed that its role goes far beyond traditional sponsorship. Instead, it has become a key logistics and economic link between international sport and Kenyan tourism.
Aviation and Sports Tourism Go Hand in Hand
George Kamal, Acting Group CEO of Kenya Airways, said the airline views sports partnerships as part of a broader tourism strategy.
“It’s not only about sponsorship. It’s about supporting the entire tourism sector, especially sports tourism,” he said.
“When someone travels to Kenya for sport today, they may return later with family. That is how sustainable tourism grows.”

Supporting the Tournament Beyond Branding
As the Official Airline Partner of the 2026 Magical Kenya Open, Kenya Airways supported the event in several practical ways.
The airline provided 20 complimentary tickets across its network to move officials and players. It also offered discounted fares to golfers, caddies and fans travelling to Nairobi for the tournament.
This support strengthened the airline’s position as the logistical backbone of the event.
Zuhura Ogada, Director of PR and Communications at Kenya Open Golf Limited, said the partnership highlights Kenya’s hospitality strengths.
“With partners like Kenya Airways, the tournament showcases the very best of Kenyan hospitality,” she said.
Connecting Global Golf to Kenya
The tournament attracted golfers from across Africa and other international markets.
For Kenya Airways, this movement of players and fans reflects a deliberate strategy. The airline aims to link air connectivity with major sporting events.
By improving travel access from key markets, the carrier helps position Kenya as more than a safari destination. It also strengthens the country’s reputation as a competitive stop on the global golf calendar.
Driving Economic Growth Through Sport
Kenya Airways Chief Commercial and Customer Officer Julius Thairu said the partnership supports both tourism and sports development.
“This tournament is important to us because we believe in sports development in Kenya,” he explained.
“It brings tourism and strengthens the broader ecosystem around sports. Events like this create jobs and economic activity.”
Thairu added that Kenya Airways’ golf initiative helps Kenyan professionals access sponsorship and international competitions throughout the year.
Local Talent Shines on the Global Stage
On the course, South Africa’s Casey Jarvis claimed victory at Karen Country Club, reinforcing the tournament’s growing global reputation.
However, local fans reserved their loudest cheers for Kenyan golfer Njoroge Kibugu. He was the only Kenyan player to make the cut, and his resilience over four days inspired many spectators.
His performance also earned national recognition. William Ruto awarded him KSh 5 million, signalling strong government support for sports development.
Innovation Beyond Passenger Flights
Kenya Airways also used the tournament to showcase its innovation arm, Fahari Aviation.
Drone technology demonstrations highlighted the airline’s broader ambitions in aviation technology, logistics and event support.
These innovations reflect Kenya Airways’ strategy to expand beyond passenger travel into future-focused aviation solutions.
Expanding Sports Partnerships
Looking ahead, Kenya Airways plans to expand its sports partnerships beyond golf.
The airline is exploring collaborations with athletics, the Safari Rally and regional endurance events. These competitions attract both athletes and international spectators.
By aligning sports events with destination marketing campaigns, the airline aims to position Kenya as Africa’s leading hub for sporting experiences and adventure tourism.
