KBL Invests KES. 54 Million in Water Conservation Partnership
Strengthening Water Security Through Sustainable Conservation
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has committed KES. 54 million to a strategic water conservation initiative with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust (UTNWF Trust).
This investment aims to enhance water conservation, mitigate systemic water risks, and improve accessibility along the Tana River basin. By supporting watershed resilience, KBL seeks to ensure sustainable water resources for communities and industries that depend on this vital supply.
“Our collaboration with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust demonstrates KBL’s commitment to safeguarding essential resources. By working together, we seek to ensure clean and safe water for communities, support agricultural livelihoods, and promote environmental sustainability,” said Eric Kiniti, Group Corporate Relations Director at EABL.
Boosting Water Security Through Strategic Partnership
Established in 2015, the UTNWF Trust is Africa’s first water fund dedicated to the long-term conservation of the Upper Tana watershed. This critical water source supplies 95% of Nairobi’s water and generates 65% of Kenya’s hydropower.
“As Nairobi’s population continues to grow, ensuring sustainable water conservation becomes increasingly critical. This partnership between KBL and the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust is a key step toward securing long-term water security for residents, businesses, and industries. We look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on our communities,” said Eng. Nahashon Muguna, MD and CEO of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

Strengthening Water Conservation, Ecosystem Protection, and Long-Term Sustainability
This partnership builds upon KBL’s previous investments in water conservation. In 2024, KBL allocated KES. 190 million to support Upper Tana watershed conservation. Additionally, the company has invested over KES. 850 million in water recovery plants at its Nairobi and Kisumu facilities, collectively recovering 1,968 cubic meters of water daily.
Beyond financial contributions, EABL actively participates in capacity-building programs, infrastructure development, and policy advocacy to promote sustainable water management.
“Collaboration is essential for conservation and securing Kenya’s water future for generations to come. We appreciate KBL’s continued partnership. Together, we can build resilient ecosystems, protect vital water sources, and create a lasting impact on both the environment and local communities,” said Eng. Michael Thuita, Chairman of UTNWF Trust.
This partnership aligns with World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, to encourage discussions, foster collaborations, and explore solutions to water scarcity. In Kenya, the success of the Tana River Basin highlights how collaborative public-private partnerships drive sustainable progress under the leadership of the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust.
