Kamene Art Residency, founded by Kenyan artist Kaloki Nyamai, is currently debuting a solo exhibition by Dominican artist Laura Arminda Kingsley. Titled “Remember, You Are But Tiny Bits of Existence,” this exhibition aims to challenge conventional notions of being. Kingsley challenges audiences to see themselves differently by intertwining various elements of the earth with the human experience. Her works explore themes of identity and nature, linking human identity to vital elements of life such as matter, algae, and the ocean. Through this, she takes us on a journey through birth, death, and rebirth, employing bold, formidable colors and patterns.
Currently based in Zurich, Switzerland, Laura draws inspiration from the relationship between human identity and matter. Her subjects inhabit a realm free from the hierarchical and social constructs prevalent today. In her statements, she eloquently articulates:
“My art invites everyone to imagine what a human being is beyond hierarchical constructions of race and gender. It explores our connection to each other and to all other life forms on Earth from a non-hierarchical perspective.”
The series comprises seven painted images accompanied by poems and animations. Additionally, she has included two mixed media works delving into nature, consciousness, and the transformation of the human experience. Through a multidimensional interplay of textures, paintings, and color, Laura encourages her audience to gracefully engage with the diverse aspects of the earth.
Kamene Art Residency aims at fostering intercultural connections and facilitating the exchange of ideas among artists worldwide. Last year, the residency space hosted exceptional talents such as Marlon Hall and Austine Adika, who co-created artworks during their stay. Furthermore, the space recently concluded an exhibition by Cave Bureau and a fashion film launch by the esteemed artist Bubu Ogusi.
