Kakuzi Eyes Lucrative U.S. Avocado Market
Kenya Must Reduce Dependence on Europe
Kakuzi Plc (NSE: KUKZ) is setting its sights on the U.S. avocado market to reduce Kenya’s reliance on European exports. The listed superfoods producer is urging regulatory agencies to prioritize market access efforts for local agribusiness players.
Speaking at the Perishable Logistics Africa 2025 conference in Nairobi, Kakuzi PLC Managing Director Chris Flowers emphasized the need to explore North America’s growing demand for avocados. He urged both policymakers and industry leaders to accelerate diversification efforts.
To ensure sustainability and better returns, Flowers highlighted the importance of tapping into high-value markets beyond Europe. He revealed that Kakuzi is already preparing its production, processing, and logistics for the North American market, pending market access approvals.

Strategic Partnerships Will Drive Market Expansion
“While China and India have potential, their demand remains lower than Europe’s. North America is the world’s largest avocado consumer and must be a priority for Kenya. Public and private stakeholders must work together to ensure Kenyan avocados gain a strong foothold,” he said.
In 2024, the U.S. consumed 1.3 million metric tonnes of avocados, compared to Europe’s 0.9 million. Over 80% of the U.S. supply came from Mexico, presenting a significant opportunity for Kenya.
“As Kenyan avocado production grows, companies must collaborate with government agencies to enter this market. A unified strategy focusing on regulatory compliance, market research, and partnerships will be essential,” Flowers added.
He urged agencies like KEPHIS to maintain their agribusiness trade diplomacy efforts to secure necessary phytosanitary approvals for U.S. exports.
Kakuzi already exports macadamia kernels to the U.S., Japan, and Europe. The recovery of macadamia markets last year saw Kakuzi increase its sales in these regions to 971 tonnes, up from 563 tonnes in 2023.
