During his trip to Luanda, President Joe Biden will visit Angola’s National Museum of Slavery to address the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring legacy. His visit to the museum will spotlight the 17th-century Capela da Casa Grande, where slavers forcibly baptized enslaved people before transporting them across the Atlantic to the Americas. As part of efforts to reckon with the history of the transatlantic slave trade, the US pledged $229,000 to support the museum’s restoration. Washington also stated that it backs Angola’s bid to designate the Kwanza corridor, a route used to march captured slaves to the coast, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Biden’s trip will also include a visit to the port of Lobito, where he will highlight $4 billion of Western investment in the Lobito corridor, signaling renewed US interest in Africa amidst China’s dominance.
