A group backed by American billionaire, Jeff Bezos, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), has successfully mobilised $4.2 billion to enhance renewable energy access across the Africa continent.

GEAPP was founded in 2021 by The Rockefeller Foundation, IKEA Foundation, and the Bezos Earth Fund.

The alliance collaborates with both public and private partners to finance renewable energy initiatives across the African continent.

Woochong Um, CEO of GEAPP, noted that with aid budgets under pressure, there is a growing need for new models capable of delivering development at scale.

“With aid budgets under pressure, we need new models to deliver development at scale”.

These projects include scaling interconnected solar mini-grids in Nigeria and providing renewable energy training to former coal miners in South Africa.

A recent report highlights that energy access in Africa is hindered by high financing costs, which are driven by perceived risks and limited affordable capital.

It also points to broken and disconnected energy infrastructure as a major obstacle to expanding access across the continent.

The analysis emphasizes that planning addressing both the supply and demand issues promotes a more robust and sustainable green economy.

Renewable energy expansion

In a similar development, African nations secured a  $100 billion investment to boost renewable energy expansion and drive green industrialization

This commitment follows a major cooperation deal signed at the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This initiative marks a crucial step in developing investment-ready green projects across Africa.

It reflects the growing global recognition of Africa’s abundant renewable resources, from solar and wind to hydro and geothermal.

These resources are seen as key drivers of the continent’s future growth.

The combined efforts of GEAPP and the recent $100 billion investment commitment signify a robust push towards enhancing renewable energy access in Africa.

Addressing the green skills gap remains a critical component in ensuring the success and sustainability of these initiatives

As these initiatives progress, they hold the potential to transform Africa’s energy system and boost economic growth

The projects also promise to enhance environmental sustainability, while positioning the continent as a leader in the global clean energy transition.
