The debate of this topic comes when LeBron James decided to change his number from 23 to 6 after winning the 2020 championship. Both numbers have been incredibly important for his career both at the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers. After playing with No. 6 for a couple of seasons and breaking the NBA scoring record, James decided to switch back to No. 23 for the upcoming season. Jeanie Buss has no idea which of both numbers will be retired to the rafters but she knows it will happen at some point after LeBron retires. For her, the impressive support James has given to the Lakers during difficult times is almost as valuable as the championship he won with the Lakers.
Buss spoke to the folks at Sportskeeda about this, she went into detail about the decision and wasn’t sure if both numbers would be retired. Usually, only one number is retired when this honor takes place. Here’s what she said: “The standard for having your jersey retired as a Laker is when a player is inducted into the Hall-of-Fame. I have absolutely no doubt that LeBron will make it into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame. When he does so, then we will retire his jersey. Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired, no doubt about it.”
