Jayson Tatum has made it to the very top of the NBA. He has made the All-Star Game in each of the last four seasons and the All-NBA First Team in both of the last two.

On Tuesday, a video surfaced of Tatum giving a message to participants at a Nike Elite Youth Basketball camp.

I don’t decide… we’re playing the Hornets tonight and I’ma chill. I only get to go to Charlotte two times a year. Somebody paid their money to come watch me play, not trying to be arrogant, but it’s a bunch of kids in there with my shoes and my jersey. And just because we’re playing Charlotte on NBA League Pass on a Monday and ain’t nobody f***ing watching, ‘yeah, I’m chilling tonight’. That’s not what the best players do.

A brewing rivalry?

Charlotte Hornets personnel and executives must be wondering what they did to make Tatum name-drop them in such an unflattering way, but the Hornets have been somewhat of a punching bag in recent times.

They have only won 41.9% of their games over the last four seasons and have had more Top 5 draft picks than playoff appearances in the past decade. The franchise was also recently sold by Michael Jordan, ultimately signaling the team’s failure during his tenure.

While Tatum’s comment was more tongue-in-cheek than anything, the Hornets will likely use it as motivation for when they meet in this upcoming season.

The chance of a lifetime

Speaking to those same kids, Tatum got one final point across about competing no matter the stakes: “Y’all next. Great player or not. Big game, not big game. Compete. Play basketball. Don’t take this s*** for granted.“

The campers went up against some of the best talents in the NBA, including Chris Paul, Bradley Beal and Paolo Banchero, in addition to Tatum.

While the campers surely have their sights set on making it to the league, this was a fantastic experience to go toe-to-toe with NBA stars and get some much-needed advice from them as well.
