With Ivory Coast’s presidential election set for October, dozens of opposition parties have formed a united front, the Coalition for a Peaceful Alternation. The coalition aims to demand electoral reforms and challenge the ruling party’s dominance. It includes major political forces such as the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI), the country’s oldest political party, and Movement of Capable Generations (MGC), the party of former First Lady Simone Gbagbo. However, former president Laurent Gbagbo’s party remains absent, leaving the opposition fragmented into three blocs. Nevertheless, the coalition could force a runoff election. If this happens, it could unite opposition voters and pose a serious challenge to President Alassane Ouattara’s party. With political tensions rising, the coalition’s ability to mobilize widespread support will be crucial in the upcoming vote.
