In a breakthrough, Israel has conducted advanced interception tests of its renowned Iron Dome air defense system, utilizing ELTA Systems’ cutting-edge Multi-Mission Radar (MMR).

During the trials, two Iron Dome batteries, each equipped with 20 interceptors, confronted a large number of rocket and drone threats from various angles.

Some interceptors appeared to trail slower rockets before intercepting and destroying them from behind.

The Iron Dome relied on the MMR radar to precisely detect and track simulated cruise missile trajectories.

While specifics were not disclosed, the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) highlighted that the tests incorporated new capabilities, marking a “significant leap” in the system’s performance and ability to counter diverse threats.

The tests involved a wide range of scenarios, simulating current and future threats the Iron Dome might face during conflict.

All scenarios were reportedly handled successfully.

‘Built on Operational Lessons’

The advanced tests were announced following Israel’s new wave of military operations against Hamas militants on March 18.

Iron Dome has played a key role in intercepting thousands of rockets, drones, and ballistic and cruise missile threats during the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli defense ministry noted that the recent tests built on “operational lessons” learned from Israel’s wars against Hamas in the south and Hezbollah in the north.

“Throughout this war, we’ve seen that the Iron Dome air and missile defense system remains a critical asset even when facing intense barrages,” IMDO head Moshe Patel noted. “This latest round of testing has allowed us to validate several new capabilities.”

Patel added that the ongoing campaign “has further reinforced our confidence in the system’s ability to safeguard Israel and its people.”

Meanwhile, Iron Dome manufacturer Rafael has called the tests “the largest and most significant ever conducted,” enhancing Israel’s capacity to address future threats.
