Stock Market and Bond Trading

If you’re wondering is the stock market open on MLK Day, the answer is pretty straightforward. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remain closed for the entire trading session, which includes pre-market, regular and even after-hours periods. Wall Street has been recognizing the MLK Day federal holiday as an official closure since 1998, making it one of the newer additions to the exchange holiday calendar actually.

The stock market MLK Day status was confirmed by financial authorities. According to official statements from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the Federal Reserve observes 11 designated bank holidays each year, with MLK Day being the first Monday closure of 2026. When the Fed is closed, banks are unable to process or settle electronic transactions.

Right now, the trading hours on MLK Day show some activity though, with stock futures continuing to trade. Futures tied to the Dow Jones were last down 0.63%, S&P 500 futures fell 0.7%, and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.92%. The bond market also observes a complete closure on this day.

Banks and Postal Services

So are banks open on MLK Day? Nearly all banks in the United States will be closing their physical branches for the full day. The Federal Reserve confirmed it will be closed, which means most commercial banks including major institutions like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo will lock their doors. Customers can still access funds via ATMs and mobile banking apps, which remain operational 24/7.

As for USPS delivery on MLK Day, it’s not happening. The United States Postal Service lists January 19 as an official holiday, suspending regular deliveries and closing retail post office locations nationwide. UPS will suspend regular pickup and delivery services too, while FedEx will be operating with modified services.

The U.S. stock exchanges are closed on MLK Day. So is the U.S. bond market, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) public calendar.

The question of whether the stock market is open MLK Day comes up every year, and the MLK Day federal holiday continues to be observed by all major financial institutions. All nonessential federal government offices are closed for the holiday along with state government offices and schools typically closing too. This year actually marks 40 years since its first nationwide observance in 1986.

What Remains Open

Cryptocurrency markets remain open 24/7 though and are unaffected by U.S. federal holidays. After all, cryptocurrency trades through a decentralized network of computers instead of through central exchanges. Stores are likely to be open, with many retailers promoting holiday weekend sales right now. So even though you can’t check if the stock market open on MLK Day for trading, you can still shop and access some financial services online.
