TISA Executive Director, Dianna Gichengo noted that the convening was a culmination of the Gen Z movement which has been demanding accountability and transparency in the utilization of resources.
“The economy of Kenya is at the heart of what we do. While this is the case, the country is marred by high public debt, bullish leadership, and a lack of transparency in the utilization of resources. Sadly, the efforts to upend the state of decadence in the country had come with a heavy burden with the demise of 60 Gen Zs owing to extrajudicial killings and the disappearance of another 60. Despite this, their loss is not in vain.”

Kenya’s ballooning Public Debt amid runaway corruption and plundering of public money remains a grave impediment to our potential as a nation.
The discourse on how the people can actively be part of the solution is timely, and it is one that all Kenyans need to engage in.
Law Society of Kenya President, Faith Odhiambo noted that, “Kenya is not deficient in legal frameworks for managing public debt. However, the misuse of this resource undermines both our growth and our ability to translate the debt into tangible investments that can generate revenue to repay it.”
She added “That is where the law must intervene, not just to regulate, but to safeguard, ensuring that public borrowing is carried out with transparency, accountability, and for the best interest of the public. I urge us all to recommit ourselves to law reform aimed at bridging the gaps that are exploited by perpetrators of malfeasance.”
To bring into perspective the debt weight in the country, TISA Director Dianna Gichengo highlighted that the public deficit as at January 2024 had reached 10.6 trillion.
