Sudan has become the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, accounting for 10% of global humanitarian needs despite having less than 1% of the world’s population, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Since April 2023, conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has killed tens of thousands and displaced 12 million. Almost nine million of the displaced persons reside in Sudan in areas with decimated infrastructure. Beyond this, approximately 26 million people face acute hunger, and famine has already been declared in the Zamzam camp in Darfur. Consequently, the IRC’s 2025 Emergency Watchlist projected Sudan as the highest-risk country for 2025, marking the second consecutive year it will rank the country so. The report warned of a worsening health crisis and restricted humanitarian access. Despite the dire condition of the country’s citizens, experts say there is no end in sight for the war.
