Nigerians may find themselves celebrating the festive Yuletide in utter darkness if the Federal Government does not take additional measures to alleviate the gas-to-power debt, as gas suppliers have commenced reducing deliveries to power plants, a troubling development that has already started to impact electricity generation across the nation.
On Tuesday, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company communicated the grim situation to customers throughout the South-East in a statement released by its Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh.
As stated by EEDC, the diminishing availability of power supply stems from low system frequency, which has been triggered by gas limitations impacting generation companies. The Distribution Company revealed that this scenario has led to the necessity of load shedding the available energy by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Consequently, EEDC noted that this predicament has affected the energy allocation received by it and diminished the daily service levels for customers serviced by its subsidiary companies — MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand.
The statement articulated, “The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC wishes to apprise electricity customers throughout the South-East region that the latest decline in the availability of power supply is attributed to low system frequency, engendered by gas constraints impacting the generation companies. As a result, this situation has compelled the load shedding of available energy by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
“This consequently has influenced energy allocation to EEDC and curtailed the daily service levels for customers serviced by its subsidiary companies, namely MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand.
“Current endeavors are underway by pivotal stakeholders in the electricity supply sector to confront this challenge and restore normal power distribution. EEDC sincerely regrets the inconvenience this predicament has caused its valued customers and appreciates their patience and understanding.”
Previously, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company also conveyed a notice to customers, stating, “Dear valued customer, Please be informed that the ongoing load shedding across all our franchise areas is a direct result of inadequate generation and allocation from the generation company and NCC.
“We urge our esteemed customers to practice patience as the GenCo team works diligently to enhance generation and allocation. We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences caused.”
