Members of the Ndigbo Buru’Otu Association have expressed shock and dismay over the recent demolition of their properties in Ijeododo community, Ijegun area of Lagos State by officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

The Chairman of the Association, Eze Chika Nwokedi, described the exercise as “heart-wrenching” as over 500 members had contributed to purchase the vast acres of land since 2017.

According to Nwokedi, the demolition came as a surprise to the association as they had followed due process in acquiring the land from the Baale, with proper documentation and family receipts issued to everyone who bought from the verified source by FHA.

No prior notice was given by FHA or the Baale regarding the demolition, leading to confusion and frustration among the affected members.

The Baale of Ijeododo, High Chief Abu-Jelili Ayinde Ododo, denied involvement and knowledge of the demolition, stating that FHA representatives had assured him that only houses marked for demolition would be affected. He expressed disappointment at the sudden turn of events and urged affected persons to remain calm as he works towards finding a solution to the situation.

Members of the association, including Martins Chikeze who owns three plots of land in the affected area, are calling on the Federal Government to intervene and ensure that their lands are returned to them. They seek a refund of the money spent on the destroyed structures and are hopeful for a resolution that will prevent further displacement and uncertainty among the community members.
