The Hungarian Defence Forces has welcomed additional Leopard 2A7HU tanks into its arsenal, further enhancing its ground combat capabilities.

The Klapka György 1st Armored Brigade announced on social media that it has received four of the German tanks to reinforce the Tarczay Ervin 11th Tank Battalion.

According to local reports, the total number of Leopard 2A7HU tanks in the fleet has now reached 30.

Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky welcomed the development, stating that the armored vehicles are now ready to safeguard Hungary’s peace.

“Our constantly arriving high-tech equipment continues to build our deterrent power,” he wrote on X.

The Hungarian Defence Forces received its first Leopard 2A7HU tanks in December 2023, five years after the contract was signed.

About the Leopard 2A7HU

The Leopard 2A7HU is a modified variant of the German Leopard 2A7, specifically tailored to meet the needs of the Hungarian Defence Forces.

It is equipped with a 120-millimeter Rheinmetall smoothbore gun, capable of accurate fire at ranges up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

Additionally, the Leopard 2A7HU features a 7.62-millimeter FN MAG machine gun and a 12.7-millimeter M2 heavy machine gun mounted on the roof for added firepower.

Powered by a 1500-horsepower MTU MB 873 Ka-501 engine, the tank can reach a top speed of 68 kilometers (42 miles) per hour, with an operational range of 500 kilometers (310 miles).

Hungary has ordered 44 Leopard 2A7HUs, set to be delivered by 2025. These tanks will gradually replace the aging T-72M1s in the Hungarian military’s inventory.
