Honeywell has secured a contract to provide advanced aerospace systems for the modernization of Japan’s H60 fleet and the new CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters.

The company will supply components that improve power generation, navigation, safety, and situational awareness.

The initiative aims to enhance aircraft reliability, maintainability, and mission performance.

“These latest awards expand Honeywell’s footprint in Japan’s defense sector and reinforce the company’s commitment to mission readiness and long-term operational performance,” said Matt Milas, President of  Defense and Space at Honeywell Aerospace Technologies.

The Systems

Both the H60 and CH-47F fleets will feature Honeywell’s RDR-7000 weather radar, upgraded APN-209 radar altimeter, and Embedded M-code GPS/INS system for secure navigation.

The RDR-7000 weather radar allows for turbulence detection, lightning and hail identification, and predictive wind shear alerts.

It also supports basic ground and sea-mapping functions.

The APN-209 radar altimeter is designed for improved reliability and performance in adverse weather conditions.

The system can be configured with an integrated altitude indicator or as a standalone transceiver, allowing compatibility with different aircraft display setups.

Embedded M-code GPS/INS is a navigation system that combines satellite-based navigation with inertial sensors to provide accurate positioning, even in environments where GPS signals are jammed or unavailable.

In addition, the CH-47F Chinooks will feature the T55-714A engine, allowing the helicopter to reach up to 170 knots (315 kilometers/196 miles per hour).

Earlier this year, Tokyo contracted Kawasaki Heavy Industries to locally produce 17 CH-47 Chinook helicopters featuring airframe, fuel system, and drivetrain upgrades to improve lift capacity.
