About Hon. Ms Thembi Simelane

Hon. Ms Thembi Simelane currently serves as South Africa’s Minister of Human Settlements, following a distinguished career in multiple ministerial and leadership roles. Previously, she held the positions of Minister of Justice & Constitutional Development (July 2024 – December 2024) and Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (March 2023 – June 2024). She also served as Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2021 to 2023 and was the President of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) from 2019 to 2021. Her extensive leadership experience includes serving as Co-President of United Cities of Local Government (UCLG) and as Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women in Local Government (2020-2022). Prior to her national leadership roles, she was the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Local Municipality from 2014 to 2021. Ms. Simelane’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a Higher Diploma in Education, and a BPhil (Political Studies) from the University of Stellenbosch, along with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Limpopo. Her expertise in governance, public policy, and infrastructure development makes her an invaluable voice at the summit.
