The Minister of Public Works & Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson; KwaZulu-Natal MEC
for Public Works & Infrastructure, Martin Meyer; and eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba, will, on Wednesday evening, 06 November 2024, sign a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on addressing public
assets in the city.

The MOU will see a list of publicly owned properties listed for private sector investment to refurbish the buildings. Minister Macpherson says, “This signing will mark an important milestone towards generating economic growth and creating jobs in the city by turning the country into a construction site and using public assets for the public good.”

Collaboration and unity

At the the singing ceremony the minister took time to highlight the historic nature of this MOU and how collaboration can be instrumental in uniting the country for economic growth. “I need to applaud the leadership of MEC Martin and Mayor Xaba who played an instrumental role in making this happen. I also want to acknowledge the technical engagements that have taken place between our spheres led by Mr. Sibande. We have put our ideological differences aside, and decided to do what is in the best interest of the residents of eThekwini and the greater KwaZulu-Natal. It is only because we have decided to work together, that we are able are able to take this historic and first-of-its-kind action we are taking today. Tonight is a good example to all of us what can be achieved when we work together towards the common good of our people. It is this kind of action which is possible under the new spirit of collaboration under the Government of National Unity.”

Leveraging the private sector

The public buildings selected for this project are all in need of investment to ensure the principle of “public assets for public good.” Without investment these buildings will continue to worsen and deepen the problem. This project come at a time where the government tightens its budget around public spending and opens new avenues for infrastructure investment.
