The ETA is a digital registration system for travelers who do not require a visa to enter the UK.

Previously, travelers from these countries could simply board a flight with their passports and undergo checks upon landing at any UK airport.

With the introduction of the ETA, these travelers must now obtain pre-travel authorization in their home countries before heading to the UK.

In Africa, only three countries—Botswana, Mauritius, and Seychelles—have visa-free access to the UK, but they are now affected by the new ETA entry requirements.

Namibia was a part of this exclusive list but the country was struck off the list in 2023.

Travelers from UK visa-free countries must now obtain the ETA in their home countries before heading to the UK.

It also applies to individuals coming for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession, those attending a permitted paid engagement, or those transiting through the UK, even if not going through UK border control.

Travelers who need the ETA include those coming to the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study.

The ETA launch

The first phase which launches today, January 8, 2025 will affect about 54 nations including the three African countries. Travelers from these countries will need an ETA to enter the UK from January 8.

The second phase which launches on March 5, 2025 will affect 34 EU nations who will need an ETA to enter the UK from April 2, 2025.

The statement, however, noted that citizens of these countries who are already resident in the UK do not need an ETA.

How to apply

The UK ETA application fee is a non-refundable £10 (approximately $12.50). Interested travelers can apply through the official UK government app via phone or directly online.

The app offers quicker processing times, with decisions typically made within 10 minutes.

Applicants are advised to upload a passport photo, take a selfie, and answer questions concerning travel plans during the application.

The online application takes around 20 minutes to complete and must be finished in one sitting.

The ETA is valid for two years and permits multiple entries, allowing applicants to visit as often as they wish.

However, since it is digitally linked to the passport, obtaining a new passport during this period invalidates the ETA, requiring a new application.
