Hensoldt South Africa is making waves at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2024 exhibition with the introduction of its new communications intelligence (COMINT) automation engine. This innovative tool is designed to revolutionize the digital battlefield by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to collect, process, and analyze signals, providing actionable intelligence with unprecedented efficiency.

The COMINT automation engine represents a significant advancement in electromagnetic warfare technology. It is engineered to intercept and process a wide array of signals, including agile frequency-hopping transmissions, which are notoriously difficult to track. By integrating wideband sensors and utilizing AI, the system can manage multiple signals simultaneously, clustering them into manageable groups for easier analysis.

Enhancing Intelligence Gathering

One of the standout features of the COMINT engine is its ability to detect and process modern communication targets such as drones and Cyber-Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) modes like GSM and LTE. The AI-driven processing ensures that intelligence is gathered quickly and accurately, enabling commanders to make informed decisions in real-time.

“With minimal operator input, the system detects modern communication targets such as drones and CEMA modes like GSM and LTE. Its AI-driven processing ensures faster, more accurate insights, and the engine is flexible enough to integrate third-party decoders for future needs,” Hensoldt stated.

Streamlined Threat Tracking

The system’s ability to read data from earlier timeframes allows users to pinpoint the exact moment a threat emerged, providing a comprehensive overview of potential dangers. This feature, combined with radio network clustering, streamlines the intelligence review process, making it easier to track and respond to threats.

Transforming Defence with AI

Wimpie van den Berg, Portfolio Manager of GEW, a business unit of Hensoldt South Africa, emphasized the transformative impact of AI on defence: “AI is transforming defence, especially in signal analysis. Our COMINT engine accelerates intelligence gathering, enabling commanders to make fast, informed decisions to counter emerging threats”.

Hensoldt South Africa, through its GEW business unit, has been a leader in the spectrum dominance industry since the 1960s. The company’s extensive experience in communications intelligence, electronic attack, and electronic warfare solutions positions it at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.

The unveiling of the COMINT automation engine at AAD 2024 underscores Hensoldt South Africa’s commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for modern defence challenges. As the digital battlefield continues to evolve, tools like the COMINT engine will be crucial in maintaining a strategic advantage over adversaries.
