Kimberley-based 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment is a non-infantry unit currently doing border protection as per the standing Operation Corona with three solid “scores” to its name over the weekend.
The first saw the gunners turned border guards on foot patrol from the Pontdrift operational base close to the Botswana/South Africa boundary encounter would-be cigarette smugglers. When spotted the guilty parties dropped their illegal tobacco product and hightailed it to the safety of Botswana. The cigarettes are reportedly valued at R152 922.
Gunners manning the support base at the Beitbridge port of entry (PoE), 110 km east of Pontdrift, also got in on the stopping smugglers act. As with their colleagues to the west, they were also footslogging and came across a Ford Ranger bakkie. A search brought to light illicit cigarettes worth R112 459.
Also in the Musina area another 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment tasking saw gunners manning a vehicle control point at a site known as T-junction, north of the town. Inspection of a suspicious vehicle was confirmed when it was identified a Toyota Corolla Cross (value R399 990) stolen in Centurion.
Confiscated vehicles, cigarettes and an unknown number of suspects were all handed to police, the SANDF said.
