After years of Kenyan business expansion into the EAC markets, EAC companies such as Amsons Group, Taifa Gas, Maziwa, Premier Bank, Yego Global, Liptons Teas, and Infusions Rwanda are now showing increasing interest in the Kenyan market.
The Tanzanian based company Amsons Group’s formal takeover bid for Bamburi Cement, underscores EAC’s expansion into Kenya. The deal, valued at Sh23.59 billion ($183 million), is the latest interest of an EAC country for a piece of business in Kenya, as seen in a report by the East African.
Amazon’s bid is following Pearl Dairy Farms’ approval to acquire a Kenyan dairy firm, which came three weeks ago. Pearl Dairy Farms is a Ugandan based milk processing firm, popular for its Lato brand.
The East African report further indicates that in March, the Comesa Competition Commission, approved the purchase of a 100% share in Highland Creamers & Food Limited, a Kisii-based business that launched operations in 2015 and is the company behind the Family Milk brand, by Maziwa, the non-operating holding company formed in Mauritius.
The trading bloc’s data indicates that as of the end of 2021, the population of the EAC region was 300.4 million, and its GDP was valued at $312.9 billion.
Taifa Gas Investment, the largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Tanzania, is building a 30,000-tonne LPG import and storage terminal in Mombasa, demonstrating the upside of enhanced Tanzania-Kenya economic relations.
