Greening the Future: NCBA’s Bold Journey to 10 Million Trees

As rain taps gently on my rooftop, I’m reminded of how essential it is to green our surroundings. Sustainability isn’t just a trendy word. Rather, it’s a personal commitment a responsibility we all share to protect and nurture our environment. And importantly, it starts with each of us.

At the forefront of this mission stands NCBA Group. The company has intentionally placed sustainability at the heart of its operations. In fact, it has pledged to grow 10 million trees by 2030 a bold and visionary goal that highlights its dedication to environmental stewardship.

Growing Roots, One Tree at a Time

To bring this vision to life, NCBA is collaborating with both private sector players and government agencies. Together, they’re championing initiatives that include eliminating single-use plastics, ensuring 100% waste recycling, greening supply chains, and speeding up the transition to clean energy. Notably, NCBA is investing in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the region.

The results are already visible. In 2023, NCBA planted more than 300,000 trees across Kenya. That number surged to over 426,000 in 2024.

In 2025, the momentum has continued, with tree-planting efforts taking root in Karura Forest, Ngong Hills, and school grounds in Kajiado, Kiambu, and Nakuru counties. These locations were selected to support both urban reforestation and community-based conservation.

Driving Change Through Purpose and Inclusion

Recognition has followed. NCBA has received awards for excellence in sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting, along with praise for its leading investing initiative in the region.

These accolades reflect more than just environmental progress. They speak to NCBA’s broader mission: championing climate action, empowering communities economically, and embedding diversity and inclusion in every layer of the business.

As NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora emphasized, “Beyond the climate change agenda, the Group has committed to steering at least 30 percent of its general services procurement spend to women and youth. This move helps us strengthen diversity and inclusion across all aspects of our operations.”
