Reacting to the rise in building collapses within the country, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a clarion call to members of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) to conduct a thorough examination of the root causes behind these structural failures and take immediate action to halt this worrying trend.

Addressing the issue in Asaba during the opening ceremony of the two-day event, “Archi-Delta Expo 2023,” organized by the state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Governor Oborevwori affirmed his commitment to doing everything within the state’s power to prevent further building collapses. He implored architects to step up to the challenge and actively engage in finding solutions.

Represented by Chief Emamusi Obiodeh, the Commissioner for Lands, Surveys & Urban Development, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the significance of the Archi-Delta Expo, an annual event organized by the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Delta State chapter. The event typically features impactful lectures within the construction industry, showcases innovative products, and recognizes deserving individuals, consultants, infrastructure companies, and government entities with awards.

The governor stressed, “I am particularly intrigued by the theme of this year’s Archi-Delta Expo 2023: ‘Sustainable Development 111 is here again.’ This theme is not only apt but also very timely. It is particularly relevant because sustainable development cannot flourish in an era where building collapses have unfortunately become commonplace. This is a cause for concern, and I urge a professional body like the NIA to take advantage of gatherings like this to thoroughly investigate the root causes of these unfortunate events and provide enduring solutions.”

He further outlined his administration’s unwavering commitment to prudently manage taxpayers’ money by completing ongoing projects and initiating new ones to fulfill their developmental objectives. The governor emphasized the importance of continuity and sustainability in development and their alignment with the government’s M.O.R.E agenda (Making Our Roads, Bridges, and Environment Better), aimed at enhancing infrastructure and human capital.

Governor Oborevwori expressed his belief in a shared vision for sustainable development between the NIA and the Delta State Government and looked forward to collaboration and synergy between the two entities.
