Google CEO Sundar Pichai met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Paris to discuss a strategic partnership aimed at expanding AI skills in Nigeria. Pichai posted about the meeting on X, stating that the discussions centered on harnessing the potential of AI in Nigeria and how his company can partner with Abuja to boost the AI skills of its citizens and support its growing tech ecosystem. Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, described the talks as “extremely productive.” According to him, the meeting signals the Nigerian government’s dedication to AI development and Google’s support for these efforts. The meeting builds on previous Google initiatives in Nigeria, including an AI Fund to support startups and a grant to accelerate AI talent development. These efforts complement other efforts by the Nigerian government, including the recent release of a national AI policy, to position the country as a leader in Africa’s AI landscape.
