Ghana is positioning itself as a regional leader in artificial intelligence with the introduction of a National AI Strategy and the development of new legislation to regulate emerging technologies.
This announcement was made at the ENJOY AI 2025 African Open in Accra, where Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Minister Samuel Nartey George.
The National AI Strategy aims to direct AI applications across various sectors, including health, education, agriculture, security, and public services. Sukparu also disclosed that an Emerging Technologies Bill, covering AI, robotics, and blockchain, is being prepared for submission to Parliament to establish ethical standards for these fields.
In his address, Sukparu highlighted existing initiatives such as the One Million Coders Programme and the Girls-in-ICT project, alongside a presidential directive mandating government agencies to implement AI tools by 2026.
This year’s competition, themed “Chasing the Stars,” emphasized Ghana’s focus on youth-driven innovation, with Sukparu acknowledging the significant role that children will play in shaping Africa’s digital future.
