The deal was sealed during an official visit to Bishkek by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who undertook a bilateral visit to the Central Asian country. He met President Sadyr Japarov and Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev.

“Today we made history as I became the first African Foreign Minister to be hosted on an official visit in Kyrgyzstan,” Mr Ablakwa said.

The agreement allows visa-free travel for government officials and is expected to pave the way for broader access for ordinary passport holders.

Both countries also signed a separate pact establishing formal political consultations, creating a structured channel for cooperation on trade, diplomacy and technical exchanges.

The visit signals a shift from limited, multilateral engagement to a more deliberate bilateral relationship, following earlier contacts on the sidelines of global meetings including the United Nations General Assembly in 2025.

Economic cooperation, particularly in gold, emerged as a central focus. Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer, while Kyrgyzstan is home to the Kumtor mine, one of Central Asia’s biggest gold operations and a major contributor to its economy.

“With Ghana as Africa’s leading gold producer and Kyrgyzstan home to the renowned Kumtor Gold Mines, we see strong potential for a mutually beneficial partnership in the mining sector,” Mr Ablakwa said.

The agreement adds to a growing list of visa waiver deals Ghana has signed in recent years as part of efforts to expand global mobility and economic ties. In 2025 alone, Accra concluded similar arrangements with countries including Mozambique, Dominica and São Tomé and Príncipe, while officials say more than 10 new visa waiver agreements have been secured recently.

For Ghana, the outreach reflects a broader strategy to diversify trade and investment partners beyond traditional markets in Europe, China and North America, as African economies increasingly look to tap new corridors across Asia.

Kyrgyzstan, a landlocked country bordering China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, has recorded steady growth in recent years and is positioning itself as part of emerging trade routes linking Asia and other developing regions.

The engagement also comes as Kyrgyzstan steps up ties with African countries following its recent observer status at the African Union, signalling growing interest in South–South cooperation.

Officials from both countries said follow-up engagements would focus on trade missions, mining investment and people-to-people exchanges, as they seek to turn early diplomatic gains into concrete economic outcomes.
