According to Daily Graphic, this recall is part of a global safety initiative targeting specific Honda models manufactured between 2001 and 2015.

The initiative seeks to rectify defective airbags that could pose serious risks to drivers and passengers in the event of deployment.

Vehicle owners in Ghana are advised to contact authorized dealerships or service centers for a free airbag replacement.

Authorities have reiterated the urgency of this matter, as faulty airbags have been linked to safety hazards worldwide.

To determine whether their vehicle is affected, owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at an authorized service centre.

Affected Honda Models:

  • Honda Civic (2001 – 2011)
  • Honda Accord (2003 – 2012)
  • Honda CR-V (2002 – 2012)
  • Honda City (2003 – 2013)
  • Honda Pilot (2010 – 2015)

What You Need to Know About Defective Airbags

1. Overly Forceful Deployment

Airbags are designed to deploy with sufficient force to cushion the impact of a collision. However, defective airbags can deploy with excessive force due to chemicals inside a metal inflator burning too fast. This can cause serious injuries to occupants.

2. Unexpected Deployment

Airbags should only deploy upon impact, ensuring safety during an accident. However, defective airbags may deploy spontaneously, even when the vehicle is in motion at high speeds. This can be triggered by minor road imperfections such as potholes, or occur without warning. Unexpected deployment can obstruct the driver’s view, potentially causing loss of control and serious accidents.

3. Failure to Deploy During an Accident

In some cases, defective airbags fail to deploy during moderate to severe collisions due to faulty motion sensors. If these sensors are damaged, the airbag system may not receive the necessary signal to activate. This failure can result in severe injuries, as drivers and passengers may be thrown against the steering wheel, dashboard, windows, or windshield.

4. Potential Injuries Caused by Faulty Airbags

Airbag defects can lead to severe injuries, including:

  • Lacerations
  • Fractures (e.g., facial bones, arm bones, collarbone)
  • Burns
  • Soft tissue injuries in the chest, neck, or back
  • Organ damage
  • Seatbelt-related injuries
  • Fatalities

Authorities stress that Honda vehicle owners in Ghana should act promptly to ensure their safety. Vehicle owners are encouraged to visit authorised service centres to confirm their car’s status and arrange for necessary replacements.

Safety should never be compromised—taking action now could prevent serious injuries or fatalities in the future.
