Germany’s main opposition party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), is considering energy cooperation with the BRICS alliance. Two members of Parliament, Jörg Urban and Steffen Kottré from the AfD, and several deputies attended a summit in Russia’s Sochi on Sunday. AfD is a far-right political entity in Germany and is the main opposition party.

European Parliament deputy Hans Nohoff also attended the conference in Sochi. Even Bundestag deputy Rainer Rotfuß wanted to attend the summit but backed out at the last moment “after talks with colleagues” and “on his own initiative,” according to DW. Germany’s opposition party is keen on collaborating with BRICS in the energy sector.

“I came to Russia to meet with representatives of the BRICS countries. We had extensive discussions on energy cooperation,” Stefan Kotre, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, told Sputnik.

Jörg Urban explained that Germany must be prepared for a fundamental shift as the multipolar world gains predominance. Addressing the future now can expand Germany’s financial turnabouts in all directions, he said.

“It is important that we, as AfD, address these fundamental questions of the future and expand our contacts in all directions right now. Only in this way can we take responsibility for our country in a multipolar world and move Germany forward,” he said.

Also, deputies from the AfD were to meet with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council and former President Dmitry Medvedev. However, the meeting was cancelled and did not go through, according to the AfD party.

However, the conference has been met with criticism in Germany, accusing the AfD of leaking national information to BRICS. Several leaders even went ahead, pointing fingers at the AfD members, accusing them of sharing military level information with Russia. The AfD has denied all the accusations, citing that they want Germany to get along well with BRICS.
