The Consulate-General of the Federal Republic of Germany is overhauling its visa processing system, with plans to significantly speed up approvals for Nigerian applicants and expand annual capacity beyond 10,000 applications, the new Consul-General, Mr. Daniel Krulls, announced at a media briefing on Wednesday.

The move aims to increase the number of approved applications beyond the current 10,000 processed annually, addressing long-standing complaints about delays and limited appointment slots at the German consulate in Lagos.

“Our main objective as a consulate is to be a facilitator, enabling people from Nigeria and Germany to meet,” Krulls said. “Visa processing is one of the most important services we provide. We are doubling visa counters, increasing personnel, and exploring external service providers for specific visa categories.”

Krulls also revealed that the consulate is introducing a system to verify academic diplomas, a programme modeled on initiatives in New Delhi, India, which had accelerated student visa approvals.

The reforms aim to ensure that all categories of visas can be processed within three weeks, a target that, if achieved, would mark a major improvement over current timelines.

The German Ambassador, Mr. Daniel Krulls said the aim was to create a system that supports Nigerians seeking education, business, and tourism opportunities in Germany

Addressing Nigeria’s emigration challenges

The move comes amid growing emigration pressures on Nigerians, who face limited global mobility.

The Nigerian passport currently ranks low on global passport power indices, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to fewer than 60 countries. Foreign perception indices also rate Nigerian travelers poorly, often resulting in longer wait times and higher visa scrutiny.

For Nigerian students, tourists, and business travelers, Germany’s reform could dramatically reduce barriers to entry, enhancing opportunities for study, professional development, and tourism.

German universities and technical institutions, particularly in STEM and vocational education, often attract Nigerian students who face lengthy visa delays. Faster approvals would enable more seamless academic planning and professional mobility.

“The goal is not just to process applications faster,” Krulls said, “but to create a system that supports Nigerians seeking education, business, and tourism opportunities in Germany.”

The plan follows Germany’s recent launch of four new Schengen visa centers in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Cyprus under a seven-year partnership with VFS Global.

The centers, located in Abuja, Lagos, Yaoundé, and Nicosia, aim to streamline applications, cut waiting times, and improve service delivery as Germany faces rising demand from African and Middle Eastern travelers seeking entry for study, work, and tourism.

Business travelers and tourists also stand to benefit. Germany is a key partner in trade, technology, and tourism sectors; streamlining visa processes could encourage greater collaboration and travel, contributing to bilateral economic ties.

The planned expansion which includes additional counters, personnel, and external service providers, is expected to increase throughput significantly while maintaining quality in vetting applications.

By making visa access more predictable and efficient, Germany is signaling its commitment to strengthening people-to-people connections with Nigeria and facilitating economic, educational, and cultural exchange.
