For 25-year-old Abdi Dahir, a turn boy from Garissa, life has always meant hard work and responsibility. Every morning, he heads to Eastleigh before sunrise.
The streets fill with traders, buyers, matatus, and shouts as business picks up. Abdi loads trucks and prepares cargo for the long journey to Garissa.
But on this day, a normal shift turned into a moment that would transform his life.
A Call That Changed Everything
While busy with work, his phone rang. He almost ignored it. As the firstborn in a family of eight, he assumed it was a relative asking for help or a friend requesting a small loan. He didn’t know the call would rewrite his family’s story.
When the caller said, “You are one of the winners in the Safaricom Shangwe @25 promotion,” Abdi froze. Years of struggle and silent prayers rushed through him.
“My whole family depends on me.
I can’t believe the little credit I buy to call customers has made me a young millionaire,” he said, his voice shaking.

“I’ve always dreamt of building my mother a decent house. With my earnings it was impossible. Now that dream will finally come true.”
Giving Back to His Community
Abdi plans to use the money to secure a home for his family and support his siblings through school. But he also thought of his community.
He received an extra KES 250,000 for a community project. Without hesitation, he chose Sangailu Primary School in Garissa. Many pupils sit on dusty floors, share broken desks, and walk long distances under the scorching sun for water.
“For the project, I want to donate desks and water tanks. If I can ease that burden even a little, their dreams will be easier to chase,” he said.
A Story of Hope for Other Youth
To Abdi, this win is nothing short of a miracle.
“I want to tell my fellow youth to keep using Safaricom. You never know, maybe one day, it will be your turn to become a young millionaire like me,” he added with a shy smile.
