Gabon’s transitional government has announced April 12 as the date for its presidential election, a significant milestone toward reinstating civilian governance following the August 2023 coup that ended 55 years of Bongo family rule. Government spokesman Seraphin Akure Davain revealed the election timeline early on Thursday morning following a cabinet meeting. He noted that voting would adhere to the country’s revised laws. The new constitution, adopted in a November referendum, caps presidential terms at seven-year tenures, banned dynastic transfers of power, and abolished the role of prime minister. A new law, revealed on Monday and believed to favor military members of the transition government, also permits military officials to contest elections under specific conditions. While the transitional president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has not formally declared his candidacy, observers believe he intends to contest in the upcoming election.
