France pledged support to India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency during a phone call between President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. The two leaders also discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict in the wake of Trump’s recent meeting with Putin in Alaska. Macron vowed to increase trade with India across multiple sectors essential to both nations’ sovereignty.
Macron’s open support for India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency comes at a time when Trump is attempting to undermine the alliance. Not just the BRICS bloc, the White House has imposed tariffs on almost all its European allies, including France. The tariffs and trade wars are bringing the West and the East together, including Australia, sending mixed signals to China.
“We agreed to work closely together in preparation for the French presidency of the G7 and the India’s presidency of the BRICS in 2026,” wrote Macron on X.

Will France Attend the BRICS 2026 Summit in India?
India will be hosting the 2026 BRICS summit, and France could be invited to be a part of the conference. The cordial phone call between India and France, where Macron pledged support to the Indian Presidency, hints that the Modi administration might send a formal invitation to the European nation to attend the summit. For the uninitiated, France was keen on attending the BRICS summit in 2023, which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Macron has expressed interest in attending the summit, but his interest was rejected by South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor. Insiders say that China and Russia were mainly behind France’s rejection to the summit. China and Russia believe the Macron administration wanted to sabotage the alliance by gaining internal access. Things might change under India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency, and France might get an invite to the summit.

France and India have maintained cordial relations in all aspects, and the association could be strengthened further. “We agreed to strengthen our economic exchanges and our strategic partnership in all areas — this is the key to our sovereignty and independence,” Macron wrote on X. If India invites France to the BRICS 2026 summit, it would be a first where a European country is a part of it.
