The Centre National des arts plastiques in Paris, France, calls for art submissions to commemorate the genocidal massacre of the Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994. This is a shock, as Rwanda had cut all ties with France in 2006 due to suspicions regarding the Hutu-Tutsi war. The French government has sought to mend relations with Rwanda despite these accusations. The project serves as a tribute to the victims and a reminder of the war’s devastating effects on the continent.
The commission is open to professional artists worldwide who have achieved remarkable career heights. The artists must have also demonstrated their talents in esteemed art galleries, art centers, and museums. Interested artists can submit their applications on the National Center for Plastic Arts website by the 31st of July.
The selections are lengthy as the selected committee will review the submissions and shortlist 3-5 applicants who will submit their proposed artwork in January 2024. The winning project will be announced on 7th April 2024, coinciding with the 30th annual commemoration of the genocide. The public will witness the presentation of the artists during the national observance on 7th April 2025.
This call for applications may be France’s way to atone and reaffirm its commitment to the Rwandan Government. The two countries have been fostering positive interactions recently, and this commissioned artwork will serve as a reminder of their peaceful relations. The national memorial will symbolize remembrance and a powerful tribute to those who lost their lives in this tragic event. France dedicates itself to inspiring efforts toward peace, unity, and understanding through art. For more information regarding the application, visit their website.
